Ontario laboratorians urged to participate in
November Webinars to explain surveillance of
participation and performance in external proficiency testing/external quality assessment (PT/EQA) programs

Accredited laboratories are now required to participate in PT or EQA for all tests included within accreditation. This is outlined in requirement VII.9.1 – The laboratory shall participate in interlaboratory comparisons such as those organized by external quality assessment schemes for all tests included within accreditation. When a formal interlaboratory program is not available or feasible, see VII.10.

What To Look For (WTLF) – Is the laboratory enrolled in a proficiency-testing program or an external quality assessment scheme for each test included in their scope of accreditation? If in Ontario, if a test is not offered under the EQA program of QMP–LS, is the laboratory enrolled in another program? Has the facility evaluated the feasibility and demonstrated that the alternative is satisfactory? In November, QMP–LS will hold three Webinars to introduce a Web-based data-entry system through which laboratories will report their participation and performance in other PT/EQA programs, for their menu of licensed tests. An invitation was sent to all QView™ account holders late October for registration in one of three Webinars to be held on November 13, 18 and 25. When registering, please make an effort to minimize the use of multiple telephone lines. Questions? Please contact Carol Turner at 416-323-9540 ext. 255 or e-mail turner@qmpls.org.

Virtual Microscopy Project Update

Thank you to those who have had the opportunity to evaluate the test whole slide image (WSI) posted on the QMP–LS Web site. The image was intended for technical evaluation; not diagnostic. We apologize for any misunderstanding in this regard. Valuable feedback was received on technical issues related to using WSIs on the QMP–LS Web site. Sufficient information has been gathered, and it will not be necessary to conduct a detailed pilot survey at this time. We thank you for your valuable feedback.

For questions or comments, please contact Joanne Miyazaki at 416-323-9540 ext. 241 or e-mail miyazaki@qmpls.org.

Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists (CSCC) 2008–9 Education Roundtables

The CSCC Education Roundtables are back again this year! Held on alternating Thursdays of each month from October to May, these sessions are held via audio-conference with Microsoft PowerPoint slides. Themes cover diverse areas of clinical chemistry, which bring together the latest advances in laboratory medicine and a forum for professional discussion.

In the past, participants from many levels have joined in these lunch hour sessions (11:30–12:30 p.m. E.T.) including technologists, managers, scientists and clinicians. These are a convenient way of obtaining continuing education requirements and gaining the latest knowledge from experts in their fields.

Please visit the CSCC Web site (http://www.cscc.ca) for more information on this year’s schedule and how to register. Ongoing registration is accepted at any time.
