Case Study

A 35-year-old male had a two-week history of easy bruising, hematuria, gum bleeding and was generally unwell. He presented to a walk-in clinic for treatment. STAT blood work revealed a marked thrombocytopenia, with immature myeloid cells present on the blood smear.

Laboratory Findings: Peripheral Blood
· WBC 16.1 X 109/L [4.0-10.0 X 109/L]
· Hb 95 g/L [13.5-17.0 g/L]
· Plt 14 X 109/L [150-400 X 109/L]

Differential: Peripheral Blood

· Neutrophil 14.0 X 109/L* [2.0-7.5 X 109/L]
· Lymphocyte 1.5 X 109/L [1.5-4.0 /109/L]
· Monocyte 0.6 X 109/L [0.2-0.8 X 109/L]
* Differential shows marked left shift
