Antimicrobial Resistance in Common Hospital Pathogens in Ontario

Report 2011QMP–LS has been tracking the evolution of resistance in common hospital pathogens in Ontario since 1996. In January 2012, QMP–LS conducted its 16th annual survey assessing the incidence of resistant hospital pathogens in the province in 2011. All 77 (62 hospital-based and 15 community-based) currently licensed bacteriology laboratories responded. These 77 laboratories provide service for 211 hospitals.

Eye on OLA: OLA Pre-Visit Questionnaire Gets Enhanced and Goes Electronic

Effective in February 2012, OLA’s Pre-Visit Questionnaire was enhanced to clarify the extent of laboratory practice, for those laboratories with cytology on their scope of accreditation. Section K of the Pre-Visit Questionnaire now asks about cytological material collection, preparation, staining and screening, as well as, case sign-out and quality control/quality assurance activities. These changes were necessitated when it became clear that in the current practice of cytology, varying degrees of practice are allowed under Ontario’s license test codes.

The current version of References for the OLA Requirements and Guidance Information (Version 5.1) is due for review to ensure continued suitability of the references to the documents and methodologies which they support. All laboratory professionals in Ontario are invited to annual review the current requirement references, discuss their suitability and provide feedback to OLA.

Review of Allowable Performance Limits for Quantitative Surveys

External Quality Assessment (EQA) and Proficiency Testing (PT) providers are required  to periodically review allowable limits of performance (ALPs) set for quantitative schemes to confirm appropriate evaluation of participant performance.  Most performance limits are based on achievable performance of methods being used; a few, such as hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) or cholesterol, are based on clinical needs.
