QMP–LS is pleased to announce the release of the OLA Requirements Version 5.1 and completion of the annual requirement references review. The release of the new version is necessary because of one change in legislation and one change in regulation. Laboratories with OLA assessment notification dates after December 23, 2011 will be assessed using version 5.1.

The External Quality Assessment (EQA) division of QMP–LS has planned 111 challenge surveys and 7 dry/web-based challenges associated with red cell disorders, coagulation, bone marrow examination, morphology and transfusion medicine for Ontario participants for the year April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013. There are 4 patterns-of-practice surveys associated with the following:
- Quality indicators in microbiology
- Validation of abnormal spurious hematology results, new parameters, uncertainty of measurement, etc.
- Use of new techniques in genetics laboratories
- Trends in cytology

The Cytology EQA Proficiency Program will continue to offer surveys in the digital morphology format. These surveys will be considered voluntary and educational. The number of images has been increased from two to five. Due to the increase in the number of digital images and recognizing the additional amount of time required to screen the images, the number of glass slides has been reduced from 10 to five. In addition, the surveys (both rotational and digital morphology) will be organized by specimen type.

The Quality Management Program—Laboratory Services (QMP–LS) is a department of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) operating under agreement between the OMA and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to serve health professionals and the public by promoting quality improvement of laboratory services through accreditation, assessment and education.

QMP–LS is seeking volunteers from Ontario laboratories to sit on its External Quality Assessment (EQA) scientific and Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) advisory panel, effective April 2012. Membership on committees consists of a three-year term of office, renewable once. Committees meet an average of four times a year for half-day or full-day meetings.

The Morphology survey MORP-1201-SB, which was scheduled for distribution the week of January 16, has been rescheduled to be distributed the week of February 6 and renamed MORP-1202-SB. However, MORP-1201-DM will be distributed as originally scheduled.

For several years, OLA has been slowly moving further and further towards a paperless system. Many of our documents are submitted in electronic form and stored that way without ever using paper. As many of our clients are aware, we have recently moved our offices to 393 University Avenue in downtown Toronto. With this move we have identified several areas where continued improvements to our processes can be made.

In response to feedback received from the 2010 participant satisfactory survey, QMP–LS has reviewed the survey reports produced for utility and have determined that as of January 2012, the Concise General Survey Report for quantitative chemistry and hematology EQA surveys (located in QView™ in the General - EQA folder) will no longer be produced.
