Playing a critical role in patient safety

The Quality Management Program—Laboratory Services plays a key role in the health-care system through the quality assurance work it does with medical labs. QMP–LS’ programs are designed to improve the reliability of test results that patients and doctors count on. Approximately 85% of decisions about your diagnosis and treatment are based on laboratory test results—which is why accurate test results are so critical.

QMP–LS performs proficiency testing on all licensed medical laboratories in Ontario, as well as accredits them to the OLA 15189Plus™ standard, which is based on ISO 15189. The program uses the principles of quality management to help labs improve their processes—and the accuracy of their test results. QMP–LS’ services are also available throughout Canada and internationally.

ACCREDITATION

The Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) division is designed to raise the standard of excellence in medical labs by accrediting labs to the rigorous OLA 15189Plus™ standard. The program provides medical labs with the tools they need to standardize their processes, address diminishing resources and set a quality benchmark. The program is based on ISO 15189 as well as other international and Canadian standards for safety and point-of-care testing and blood safety.

ASSESSMENT

QMP–LS’ External Quality Assessment (EQA) division performs proficiency testing of medical labs and evaluates the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes using challenge surveys with fresh and simulated patient samples as well as patterns-of-practice surveys. Education is a critical component of the EQA program, which produces hundreds of survey reports, committee comments, best practice guidelines, broadsheets, webinars and other scientific papers each year.
